About This Spot

Stepping into Chong's Supermarket feels like uncovering a quiet gem tucked within Coralville’s everyday rhythm—a place where the familiar hustle slows into a thoughtful, meandering exploration. Despite a modest facade, the moment you cross the threshold, you’re met with aisles brimming with the kind of ingredients and goods that invite you to linger, discover, and imagine new flavors unfolding at home. The space balances a sense of purposeful calm with an underlying current of warmth, shaped by the steady hum of fellow shoppers seeking familiar tastes and curious newcomers venturing beyond their usual pantry staples.

The market’s personality is woven through its shelves: rows of vibrant produce that seem freshly harvested, shelves tightly packed with rice, noodles, and an array of humble staples that whisper of distant kitchens. Here, the atmosphere is quietly alive with possibility. The scent of freshly baked Korean pastries from a nearby artisan bakery lingers faintly in the air, grounding the experience in a comforting intersection of tradition and everyday life. There’s a modest intimacy here; it’s the kind of place where even if you’re not fully sure what you’re looking for, the joy is in the discovery itself.

Chong’s is more than a grocery store—it’s a portal to the rhythms of Korean and wider Asian cuisine, where cookware and specialty ingredients find their place alongside familiar staples. The thoughtful curation gives you the chance to encounter items rarely found elsewhere in the area, making each visit feel like a personal journey through culinary culture. For locals new to the scene, or longtime enthusiasts, the store provides a steady, reassuring heartbeat of freshness and authenticity.

It’s a spot that quietly invites you to slow down, browse without hurry, and leave with more than just groceries—maybe inspiration for your next meal, or even just the simple satisfaction of connecting to a broader community through shared flavors and careful stewardship of ingredients.

My friend took me here for the first time yesterday, as I cook primarily Asian dishes. I was in Heaven! There were so many ingredients I found that before I was having to buy online or search high and low. My partner and I are new to ic and its nice to have an Asian market so close to us!

They have really expanded since I was here years ago. Looks small but has lots of space that is filled with baked and frozen treats. Go there if you love Korean bakery items because their baked goods come from a great bakery in Chicago. Just when you think you’ve seen everything there’s more. Endless rice and ramen options. They have some freshly prepped side dishes and a small section of home goods Wish they had more Kpop, Korean souvenir, ,and memorabilia but prices are reasonable compared to c fresh in Des Moines. Will definitely come back when in town so worth the trip

Ingredients you don’t get anywhere else! Not the greatest curb appeal, but good pricing for items you can’t get anywhere else.

Chong's has great and wide selections of items. Their selections focus mainly on Korean stuff. I like their fresh produce - it seems like they always take good care of them before putting them on display. Might be a bit intimidating if not sure what to look for, but it's worth exploring!!

I remeber when this authentic oriental store was in downtown Iowa City. They even had a restaurant inside the store as well. Construction took over and now it's a parking lot with a very great tasting pizza place called Falbos. I love how the vegetables and meat are very fresh and tastey. The cooking utensils and variety of available ingredients are what keeps me coming back.
